Hemant and Vaishali Panwar
Hemant and Vaishali Panwar are a Kathak dancing duo who have been working together for the last 18 years. Both of them have received extensive formal training in Kathak of Jaipur Gharana at the National institute of Kathak Dance under the guidance of Pt. Rajendra Gangani in India. Both were conferred the title “Singar Mani ‘in Bombay for the distinguished duet dancers of the year in 2000, and both were chosen to work in Documentary Film “ Jaipur Kathak” for the National TV channel Doordarshan.
As part of Year of India in Canada (June – July 2011), organized by Tourism Toronto and India Tourism, Hemant and Vaishali performed in Ottawa,Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Hamilton, Toronto, and Vancouver.
As performers, choreographers and instructors, both Hemant and Vaishali have continually revived and refined their technical and artistic skills. They have performed as a duo in Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Japan, Canada and many others. On an award from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Hemant taught Dance and Vocal Music in Georgetown, Guyana (South America) for three years. In Guyana, Vaishali had the opportunity to choreograph a Dance Drama Shakuntala for which she wrote the dance script as well, and Hemant composed the music.The drama was remounted with a cast of 45 dancers with smashing success in Cityplayhouse Vaughan , Canada in 2008.
Hemant and Vaishali have been performing extensively in Canada, USA and other countries in various dance festivals, community events, cultural occasions and celebrations.Their performances in recent years include PKM Jayanti festival, Betty Oliphant Theatre, Kathak Mahotsav Canada, Mosaic Festival Mississauga, Mehndi Masti Masala Festival, Bora Laskin Auditorium, Thunderbay, Parliament House, Regina Performing arts centre & Saskatoon Collegiate Theatre Saskatchewan, Creations India Festival and many more to name.
Hemant and Vaishali both teach workshops throughout the GTA and Peel school districts, where they have set up branches of Panwar Music and Dance.
